SAMPOL has designed and built a 6.75 MW industrial behind-the-meter microgrid for Janssen’s (Johnson & Johnson) pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, to protect production processes against failures in the public power grid. The installation normally operates in parallel with the grid and can transition to island mode in the event of a complete loss of external power supply. It comprises two Bergen natural gas reciprocating engines and a 2 MW / 1 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The battery energy storage system complements the natural gas engines, enhancing power supply stability and security. Heat recovery from the engines enables the production of 3.2 t/h of steam and 2.5 MW of thermal energy for industrial hot water. The plant also includes a 250 m³ LNG storage and regasification system, providing a stated fuel autonomy of four days.
