The Port Authority of Bilbao is advancing its sustainability and decarbonisation strategy with an ambitious Onshore Power Supply (#OPS) project across its main quays. ⚡⚓
The project, carried out by a joint venture comprising COMSA Industrial, SAMPOL and Montajes Eléctricos San Ignacio (MESI), includes the design, construction and maintenance of new electrical infrastructure that will supply clean energy to ferries, container ships and cruise vessels during their stay in port.
🔌 9 OPS systems installed at quays A1, A2, A6, AZ3, and Getxo 2 and 3 will serve the port’s main shipping operations, replacing onboard generators with low-emission shore-based electricity.
From a technical perspective, the project includes a 30 kV distribution network, dedicated substations tailored to different vessel types, control and monitoring systems, and a submarine cable crossing the Bilbao estuary to ensure electricity supply on both banks.
With a budget of approximately €50 million, this initiative represents one of Spain’s most significant port electrification projects, helping to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution in the surrounding port and urban areas.
🌍 Another step towards a more sustainable maritime sector, aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal (#EUGreenDeal), Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (#PNIEC), and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
This project is supported by funding from the European Commission’s #CEFTransport programme (#CINEA) and co-financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
