SAMPOL designed and built a 6.75 MW behind-the-meter industrial microgrid for Janssen’s (Johnson & Johnson) pharmaceutical plant in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, to protect production processes from utility grid outages. The system normally operates in parallel with the grid and can switch to island mode during a complete loss of external power. It consists of two Bergen natural gas reciprocating engines and a 2 MW / 1 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
Battery storage complements the natural gas engines, enhancing power stability and reliability. Heat recovered from the engines produces 3.2 metric tons of steam per hour and 2.5 MW of thermal output as hot water for industrial use. The plant also includes storage and regasification infrastructure for 250 m³ of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with a stated fuel supply sufficient for four days of operation.
