SAMPOL designed and built a 6.7 MW behind-the-meter cogeneration plant for Kenvue’s industrial facility in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, to reduce emissions and energy costs while improving power reliability. The plant features two Bergen natural gas reciprocating engines, with exhaust heat recovery to produce steam and heat recovery from the cooling circuits to generate hot water. An auxiliary boiler supplements steam production, bringing total capacity to 13.2 metric tons per hour.
The plant operates in parallel with the utility grid and can also operate in island mode, supported by liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and regasification infrastructure that provides enough fuel for five days of operation. According to project documentation, the solution delivers an estimated 44% reduction in carbon footprint and a 25% reduction in energy costs compared with the previous setup.
