Electrifying Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport with Two 10 MW Electric Boilers
SAMPOL is participating in the electrification of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport by installing two electric boilers, each rated at 10 MW, to increase the airport’s thermal production capacity. Manufactured in Norway, the boilers were transported to Madrid through a complex logistics operation combining sea and road transport.
The boilers were installed inside the existing cogeneration building, in the second-floor boiler room. Given their dimensions and weight of approximately 8 metric tons each, temporary modifications to the building’s structure were needed to bring the units inside and position them.
Precision Installation Using 200- and 50-Metric-Ton Cranes
The operation required partial removal of the building’s roof and temporary modifications to structural elements to provide access to the boiler room. A 200-metric-ton main crane lifted and positioned the boilers, while a 50-metric-ton auxiliary crane rotated them from a horizontal to a vertical position.
After being lifted through the roof opening, the boilers were carefully maneuvered manually into their final positions. The complex installation was successfully completed in a single day thanks to detailed logistics planning, coordination between engineering and construction teams, and advance preparation.
