SAMPOL has designed and built a 6.7 MW behind-the-meter cogeneration plant for Kenvue’s industrial facility in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, aimed at reducing emissions and energy costs and improving supply reliability. The plant incorporates two Bergen natural gas reciprocating engines, with heat recovery from exhaust gases to produce steam and use of cooling circuits to generate hot water. An auxiliary boiler complements steam production for a total capacity of 13.2 t/h.
The generation system operates in parallel with the public grid and can run in island mode, supported by an LNG storage and regasification infrastructure providing five days of autonomy. According to the project documentation, the solution delivers an estimated 44% reduction in carbon footprint and a 25% reduction in energy costs compared to the previous setup.
