Installation of the complete CATIII visual aid system
The project involved the dismantling of existing systems and the installation of new visual aids on the airport’s 16L-34R runway and associated taxiways, including the installation of 2,251 lights, 37 constant-intensity dimmers, 4 high-voltage selectors, 2 PAPI systems, a Category III approach system, threshold identification and an approach system using sequential flashing lights, backlit signs for vertical signage, over 700 km of cabling, and the expansion and upgrading of the airfield lighting control and display system.
All the work was carried out in coordination with the civil engineering works
Several visual aid (PAPI) calibration flights were also carried out, adjustments were made to the ILS-16L glide path to ensure compatibility with the approach, and existing infrastructure – such as the approach control towers and the 1240 control room – was adapted, and the Integrated ATC Information System was updated to ensure compatibility with the enhanced Command and Display System (ALCMS).
All work was carried out in coordination with the civil engineering team, which included the resurfacing of the runway and taxiways, the upgrading of the runway edges and RESAs, a new service road, the construction of a fuel pipeline underpass beneath the runway, and the construction of the new air traffic controllers’ room.
